XML - eXtensible Markup Language - Extensible Markup Language recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium as a markup language is a set of general syntax rules.

XML - this is a text format, suitable for storing structured data (instead of the existing database files) to share information between programs, as well as to create on its basis of specialized markup languages (like XHTML for internet), which are sometimes called dictionaries.
